What to Do After You Buy a Home (Before You Start Renovating or Furnishing)

Buying a home is a big milestone—but once you get the keys, a new question comes up quickly:

“Where do we even start?”

Whether you’re planning to renovate, furnish, or make a few meaningful updates, having a clear plan before you begin can save time, money, and a lot of stress.

Here’s how I guide clients through that early stage.

1. Take a Step Back Before Making Changes

It’s tempting to jump straight into decisions—but this is where costly mistakes happen.

Instead, take time to:

  • Understand how you want the home to function

  • Identify what’s actually not working

  • Prioritize what matters most

2. Decide What Needs Renovation vs What Doesn’t

Not everything needs to be changed right away.

Some updates are worth doing immediately (layout, major functionality), while others can wait.

This is where having a plan makes a big difference—so you’re not redoing things later.

3. Understand Your Budget (Realistically)

Many homeowners underestimate costs or try to do everything at once.

A better approach:

  • Identify your top priorities

  • Phase your project if needed

  • Allocate budget where it has the most impact

4. Think About the Whole Home—Not Just One Room

Even if you’re starting with one area, decisions affect the entire home.

Layout, finishes, and furnishings should feel cohesive—not pieced together over time.

5. Get Guidance Early (Before You Commit)

This is often where clients feel the most overwhelmed.

Having someone walk through the home with you and map out:

  • What’s possible

  • What’s worth doing

  • What to prioritize

…can completely change how you move forward.

I work with homeowners right after they purchase to help them plan renovations, furnishing, and updates—so they can move forward with clarity and confidence.
